Youth Mediation and Education Project

What we are:

The “Youth Mediation and Education Project” involves youth as mediators in community conflicts that involve youth. The youth will participate in educating the public about conflict resolution and mediation. As a result, we hope that more people in our community, young and older, will look to mediation as a viable option for resolving conflicts.

Following some intensive training in community mediation, for all of the participants, a small team of our current adult members along with a team of youth will participate in specialized training.

After training, there are four areas of activities for the youth to participate in:

  1. Actual mediations as well as intake of mediation participants;
  2. Educational initiatives- presentations about conflict, conflict management skills and mediation for youth and adults including parents;
  3. Design and publish a conflict resolution handbook for youth and adults that will focus primarily on mediation so that it will be used as a way to resolve conflicts.
  4. Finally, youth will be given the opportunity to become an important resource for our organization through their contributions as new board and committee members.

Participating in this project involves an initial 24-hour training (assuming at least 8 hrs of previous mediation training) and one meeting per month for skill practice and educational programming (to be determined based on youth schedules). In addition, monthly or bi-monthly involvement in the educational presentations will be expected.

This project is financed by a grant from the Monroe County Community Alliance to Promote Education (CAPE). For more information and answers to your questions call 336-8677
